in your pricerange you can get a very good computer. i would build it yourself though. much better than sore bought, and you get everything you want/need nothing you dont.
heres what id go with if i was looking for a full system including monitor
    motherboard- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
asus is the only brand i go with for boards anymore.
processor- there are 2 to choose from. 1 is a faster speed, but dual core. the other is slower, but quad core. the quad core is a bit more future proof, and if you convert video to burn to disk it will run a lot faster than the dual core. quad- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
    dual- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
    memory- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
ive heard so many good things about this ram im going to use it on my next build.
    graphics card- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
with what you do this will be plenty for you, you dont need a really high end card.
    hard drive- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
400gb will be plenty of storage for you.
    cd/dvd drives- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
you can run 1 or 2 of these, or 1 of these and another drive thats a normal dvd drive or a cdrw drive.
    power supply- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
    monitor- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
22″ widescreen will be big enough for anything you want to do. you can go smaller if you want.
that takes you to about $1250 after mail in rebates. i did not list a case, because there are so many different styles that something i like you may not and you can pic 1 that looks good to you. go with a mid tower atx or full tower atx.
i also didnt list an os, because again thats something that you want to pick. you may want to go with 1 of the vistas or you may want to go with xp, or even something else like linux

With a 19″ monitor I would say that $800 seems to be about average.

You can get a decent one for somewhere between $400-$500 without a monitor
If you plan on gaming, you’d spend somewhere between $800-$1200
